Barrier paper: compare the test conditions before the numbers

Two reports can show the same oxygen transmission number and still describe different tests. Before replacing a dry-snack pouch with barrier paper, compare the material structure, test conditions and finished package.

Contents

  1. The number needs its test conditions
  2. Ask what the finished material contains
  3. Evaluate the converted pouch as well
  4. Keep the product and trial conditions comparable
  5. Retain the conditions behind a successful trial
  6. Questions to send your supplier

The number needs its test conditions

Consider two fictional reports, both showing an OTR of 3 cm³/(m²·day). One says 23°C, dry; the other says 23°C, 50% relative humidity. The matching number does not establish matching performance. These are invented reports, not results for a commercial paper grade.

Collect the method and version, temperature, humidity conditions on the relevant sides, specimen structure, conditioning and full units, including any pressure basis. Jujo Thermal’s published grade table illustrates barrier values presented with temperature, relative humidity and units.[2] It does not establish the result for a different construction or finished pouch.

Ask what the finished material contains

“Barrier paper” is not a complete layer specification. Request the paper grade, barrier treatment, printing, adhesives and any sealant or additional layer. Nippon Paper describes its SHIELDPLUS coating approach and conversion with a sealant layer.[1] Other grades can have different structures.

Confirm which side faces the product and which surfaces are joined during sealing. The words “paper pouch” alone do not establish a plastic-free construction, recyclability in the destination market or suitability for contact with your food.

Follow the material into the finished package
Follow the material into the finished package123
  1. 1Flat material: identify every layer and the test specimen
  2. 2Converted pouch: examine folds, seams and sealing conditions
  3. 3Filled pouch: evaluate the actual product and storage conditions

The three objects are different evaluation stages. Arrows do not mean that passing one test approves the next stage.

Evaluate the converted pouch as well

Use trial pouches with the intended folds, gussets, seals and printing. Inspect areas that have been formed or joined and agree with the converter and laboratory how damage and package leakage will be evaluated. AMETEK MOCON’s public overview flags measurement challenges for coated paper.[3] That overview alone does not define a test procedure.

Ask the laboratory which specimen preparation and method are suitable for the actual coated structure. Separate transmission through material from leakage through a seal or defect; do not put results with different objects or units in a single ranking. Record sealing equipment and settings for each trial.

Keep the product and trial conditions comparable

For a dry snack, run the candidate and the current package with the same product, pack quantity, headspace approach, filling conditions and agreed storage plan as far as practicable. Record deviations. Define in advance what will be assessed, when, and who can approve the result: for example texture, aroma and package condition.

This is a proposed comparison plan, not a validated food-safety protocol or a shelf-life prediction. Product-specific safety, food-contact requirements and shelf-life decisions need their own responsible review. A flat-sheet barrier result cannot approve those decisions by itself.

Retain the conditions behind a successful trial

If a candidate performs acceptably, retain the exact grade and layer construction, pouch drawing, approved samples, converting and sealing conditions, test reports and decision criteria. A change in coating, adhesive, sealant, package size or filling process should be assessed against that record.

Compare price and order quantity only after identifying what each quote includes: coated material, printed reel, empty converted pouch or filled product. Ask separately which environmental claims can be substantiated for the complete package and its destination; material substitution alone is not the evidence.
