Wood component quotes: the same outline can hide a different construction
A drawing of a rectangular panel does not settle whether the offer is solid wood, plywood or a glued-laminated component. Compare the material build and the delivered machining and finish before comparing unit prices.
Keep the drawing, but add the material section
A buyer asks three suppliers for an interior wood panel with the same outside dimensions and drilled holes. One offer is for a solid board, another for faced plywood, and a third for glued-up lumber. The outer shape may match while visible edges, joint locations and included finishing differ.
FFPRI distinguishes solid wood from materials rebuilt from wood elements using bonding.[1] Use the drawing as the geometry reference, then ask each supplier to identify its construction, species or relevant face/core materials and the supplied state. Do not infer identical performance from identical length, width and thickness.
Identify what is joined, and in which direction
The Forestry Agency describes glued-laminated lumber with the grain of the pieces running parallel, and plywood built from veneers with alternating grain direction.[2] The material names therefore describe different constructions. They do not define every adhesive, face grade or property of an offered part.
Ask for the proposed cross-section and joints, visible face/edge requirements, relevant bonding or exposure classification and the evidence needed for the intended use. Clarify whether a laminated proposal is a non-structural component or a structural product with specified requirements. This interior-panel comparison does not approve structural substitution.
- 1Solid wood: identify the piece, grain direction and cut
- 2Plywood: identify face/
core and veneer grain directions within the panel plane - 3Glued-laminated proposal: identify lumber pieces, joints and bonding
2 is an exploded perspective of veneers; arrows indicate illustrative in-plane grain directions. 1 and 3 show material construction. Layer sizes and counts are illustrative, not product specifications; no strength, exposure class or interchangeability is implied.
Quote the state you want to receive
On the drawing, identify datum faces, hole positions, tolerances, visible surfaces, grain direction where it matters and the edge profile. State whether the quote includes cutting only, planing/sanding, drilling, edge treatment and coating. A ready-to-machine blank and a finished component are different deliveries.
For the plywood proposal, ask how the exposed edges and any face finish will be treated. For solid or glued-up material, ask how the proposed piece selection and joints relate to the visible faces. Keep moisture requirements and their measurement basis with the specification rather than assuming that a material label settles them.
Use one comparison sheet with explicit deviations
Ask suppliers to mark alternatives instead of silently replacing the specified construction. The following fields are an enquiry template; the responsible designer or buyer must decide which differences are acceptable for the use.
| Compare | Specify or attach | Supplier identifies |
|---|---|---|
| Material construction | Specify or attachSection sketch, species/face/core, use and visible surfaces | Supplier identifiesSolid, plywood or laminated build; joints and deviations |
| Machining | Specify or attachDrawing revision, datum, holes, edge profile and tolerances | Supplier identifiesIncluded operations and state for measurement |
| Bonding and finish | Specify or attachExposure requirements, visible edges and finish reference | Supplier identifiesProposed materials/process scope and evidence gaps |
| Delivery scope | Specify or attachQuantity, packing, receiving point and required records | Supplier identifiesFinished dimensions, included work and exclusions |
Resolve the differences before choosing the lower price
If a proposal changes the construction, ask which appearance, dimensional, fixing or use questions need review on a sample. Identify the sample and drawing revision, record the decision and carry the accepted construction into the order. A favourable unit price does not close a material change.
Send the drawing or a sample, intended use, destination, visible-face requirements and the work still open. If what you need is a finished table or chair, move to the furniture enquiry and its separate product evaluation.
