Replacing an industrial timing belt with unreadable markings

Connect pitch, tooth profile, tooth count and nominal width to the installed pulleys, rather than ordering from damaged dimensions.

An endless toothed belt removed from a packaging machine has unreadable markings and a worn edge. Would a candidate of similar length and width work? In this hypothetical industrial purchase, the first task is to recover the original nominal specification and pulley pairing. Measurements of the damaged belt alone are not an order specification. Automotive engine timing belts are outside this article.

  1. Recover the specification behind the damaged sample
  2. Matching pitch still leaves the tooth profile
  3. Inspect the pulleys that will remain
  4. Once dimensions are identified, assess the duty
  5. Compare a supported specification, not just a length

Recover the specification behind the damaged sample

Cross-check the machine bill of materials, maintenance records, remaining markings and unused spare labels. Photograph the full loop, teeth, back, edges and damage; separate readable characters from guesses. An old parts list also needs to match the machine’s actual revision and modifications.

A tape measurement around the outside is not automatically the catalogue pitch length. Cross-check nominal pitch length using confirmed pitch and tooth count, keeping it separate from measured outside circumference. Mitsuboshi’s S8M table distinguishes designation, tooth count, pitch circumference and actual width. [2] If missing teeth prevent a complete count, leave that information unresolved and seek other records.

Matching pitch still leaves the tooth profile

Pitch is the spacing between corresponding points on adjacent teeth. Connect the confirmed pitch family and profile, tooth count, width, single/double-sided teeth and construction to a full product code. Worn tooth appearance alone is insufficient; use sound portions and pulley documentation. Width measured across a damaged edge also differs from original nominal width.

Mitsuboshi distinguishes its trapezoidal Timing Belt G from round-profile Super Torque G. [1] “Round tooth” or “same pitch” alone does not establish interchangeability across families. A proposal to retain existing pulleys needs manufacturer evidence for the specific pairing.

  3. 3Belt engagement with pulley grooves

Conceptual endless single-sided toothed belt and pulleys. Numbers identify tooth detail, width direction and engagement. The illustrated profile does not specify actual dimensions, interchangeability, tension or tooth count.

Inspect the pulleys that will remain

If one edge is worn, buying the same width again may leave the cause in place. Have the machine side inspect pulley grooves and flanges for wear/damage, contamination, shaft parallelism/alignment and tension adjustment. A damage pattern alone is not a conclusive diagnosis; share its location and the operating circumstances.

Keeping the pulleys or replacing them with the belt changes the supply and installation scope. A family change also brings pulley attachment, shaft centres, adjustment travel and guard clearance into review. Being able to place a new belt over the pulleys by hand does not prove correct engagement or operating suitability.

Once dimensions are identified, assess the duty

Dimensions do not establish transmitted capacity or life. Supply normal load and speed, starts/stops/reversals, shocks, positioning requirements and operating hours. Compare temperature and exposure to oil, chemicals, water or dust with the candidate’s body, tensile cord and tooth-facing specifications. Simply increasing width can also change pulley and tension requirements.

Mitsuboshi’s installation guidance calls for specified tension checks, remeasurement and correct engagement. [3] Use product- and machine-specific tension and measurement conditions, rather than hand feel. Suitable personnel follow machine energy-isolation procedures for adjustment/installation, then restore guards for the agreed operating checks.

Compare a supported specification, not just a length

The table illustrates hypothetical responses, not real quotations. If the full pairing remains unresolved, retain that uncertainty when reading price and delivery assumptions. Align whether the quote includes only the belt, pulleys, inspection or installation.

Record original evidence, full candidate code, pitch/profile/tooth count/width, applicable pulleys and duty, accessories and open questions. Obtain approval from the responsible machine-side party before specification changes. HAM can discuss procurement conditions and help explore Japanese companies using marking photos, the parts list, pulley details and operating circumstances.

Supplier enquiry to adapt

Open supplier questions
We are considering an endless toothed belt replacement for [industrial machine]. Original code: [readable characters / unknown]; parts list: [number/revision]. Photos show the belt, teeth, edges and pulleys. Confirmed pitch, profile family, tooth count and nominal width are [details / gaps], separately from measured outside circumference and worn width. Existing pulley code/condition: [details]; load, speed, starts/stops and environment: [conditions / gaps]. Please state the full candidate code, evidence for use with the existing pulleys, construction/use conditions, necessary pulley changes and tension/installation verification requirements. Quote belt, pulleys, accessories and work separately. Changes proceed after machine-side approval.
