Ceramic prototype machining in Japan: from function to RFQ

Updated · Written by HAM

Start a ceramic prototype enquiry with the function, material status, drawing, quantity and finished-part inspection requirements. Use the same brief to compare Japanese candidates.

What must the prototype prove?

Imagine an insulating spacer that fits between two metal parts. Five samples are needed to check assembly and performance before deciding whether to make more. “Alumina, five pieces” leaves important questions unanswered: which grade, which faces locate the assembly, what conditions the insulator must withstand, and what evidence will accompany the parts. This is a fictional enquiry example, not a HAM customer case.

Ceramic machining services can begin with a material recommendation, a specified grade or a finished drawing. Make that starting point explicit. This guide concerns industrial functional parts, not pottery or dental work.

Start from what is already decided

Choose the branch that matches your material and drawing status. Each branch can lead to an enquiry; none means the part is already approved.

AMaterial undecided

Function and operating conditions are known; the grade is open.

Ask for grades and evidence to review.

BGrade specified

A material requirement is set; confirm availability and permitted alternatives.

Flag any proposed substitution.

CDrawing ready

A controlled revision defines the part and critical features.

Ask for feasibility and inspection exceptions.

One prototype enquiry

Combine the chosen starting point with quantity, finished-part requirements, inspection and destination. Keep undecided items visible.

Manufacturer’s response

Proposed grade and process, feasible features, inspection scope and exceptions.

Design owner’s review

Assess suitability and resolve material or drawing changes before accepting the proposal.

This is an information path, not a manufacturing sequence. The drawing symbol is schematic and specifies no geometry or tolerance.

Starting pointSend nowAsk the candidate to resolve
Material undecidedFunction, operating temperature, electrical or chemical exposure, load, environment and known failure mode.Proposed material grades, relevant property data and tests needed to assess suitability.
Grade specifiedMaker/grade or composition, property requirements, dimensions and permission rules for alternatives.Availability of that grade; any proposed alternative and its differences before substitution.
Drawing readyRevision-controlled drawing and CAD, quantity, critical features and inspection requirements.Feasibility, process, exceptions and inspection scope against that exact revision.

A material data sheet supports a choice; it does not qualify the finished part for your application. Precision Ceramics offers material-selection references [5], illustrating why the function and test conditions belong in the enquiry.

For alumina machining, specify the finished condition

“Alumina” does not identify a unique supplier grade. Carry the required composition or grade and performance conditions into the quotation request. If the material is still open, ask for a proposal and keep the design decision open until the relevant evidence has been reviewed.

Nishimura describes machining CIP-formed ceramics before firing [2]. That is a different process stage from machining a fired part. Ask which route is proposed and which dimensions will be inspected on the finished prototype. Do not assume a pre-firing dimension or a general capability statement establishes the tolerance on your delivered component.

Fictional insulator: turn a sketch into a reviewable RFQ

Enquiry itemExample informationDecision still needed
Purpose and quantityFive insulating spacers for an assembly trial; later demand is undecided.Which functional tests must the prototype pass before a production decision?
Drawing statusSketch revision A shows two locating faces and a through-hole; the final drawing is not approved.Designer to define datums, hole location, finished dimensions and tolerances.
MaterialAlumina is a candidate; grade is not selected.Supplier to propose grade and property evidence for the stated operating conditions; designer to assess it.
InspectionNeed measured results for the locating faces and hole, identified to drawing revision and sample.Agree method, measurement condition, report format and any tests that require separate samples.
DeliveryDestination country and requested date supplied by buyer.Quote manufacture, inspection, packing and delivery assumptions separately; confirm actual acceptance and timing.

No numerical tolerance is invented for this example. The important outcome is an agreed finished-part requirement, not a plausible-looking drawing.

Japanese candidates: published capability and open questions

CE-RISE [1]Publishes prototype manufacture from one piece without a mould, with a route through to production.Grade, geometry, final tolerance, inspection report, delivery date and whether it can supply your overseas destination. The reviewed page does not establish export terms.
Nishimura Advanced Ceramics [2–4]Publishes one-piece/small-lot prototypes, alumina among its materials and pre-firing machining. Has an English enquiry channel and announces international exhibitions.Machining route and finish for your drawing, grade, inspection and export/shipping arrangements. An English channel is not acceptance of this order.

Primary pages checked 17 October 2026; links below. These are candidates to investigate, not HAM partners or approved suppliers. No quotation or delivery commitment has been obtained.

Compare the prototype and production routes separately

A tool-free prototype can help evaluate a design, but it does not settle the process or cost for later production. Ask whether the proposed grade, forming route, machining and inspection would change at the expected repeat quantity. Keep any tooling charge, minimum batch and engineering work visible in the quote.

Compare offers against the same drawing revision and material requirement. If one supplier excludes a critical inspection or proposes a different grade, resolve that difference before judging the price. For an overseas order, add packing, shipping terms, documents and a contact for questions about the inspection results.

Discuss a ceramic prototype with HAM

Tell us the application, drawing status, candidate material or required properties, quantity and destination. HAM can help organise what is missing and the technical and commercial questions for Japanese candidates. A first discussion can begin while the grade or drawing is still undecided.

The initial request form accepts text. Mention drawings and test information you can share, and use the enquiry below to make the open decisions visible. Material suitability and drawing exceptions need the design and manufacturing teams’ review.
